Best OTC Treatments for Foot Fungus

Foot fungus, also known as athlete’s foot or tinea pedis, is an all-too-common skin infection that can affect the toes, soles, heels, and bottom of your feet. The symptoms of this condition vary from person to person; some people may have itchy feet, while others may have oozing blisters or offensive foot odor.

Athlete’s foot or foot fungus is caused by a ringworm fungus and is contagious. This infection is commonly picked up at the gym, in the locker room, at a swimming pool, or nail salon – or basically by walking barefoot on any surface where an infected person has also walked.

Since up to 70% of the population will be afflicted with this foot fungus at one time or another in their lives, it is a good thing that there are some great treatments on the market that do not require a visit to your doctor.

Nonprescription Remedies for Foot Fungus

Athlete’s foot or foot fungus can sometimes be treated with over-the-counter (OTC) antifungal treatments. How you treat a particular case of foot fungus or athlete’s foot is dependent upon its severity and type. The best OTC treatments for foot fungus include Lamisil AT (terbinafine), Lotrimin AF (clotrimazole), Tinactin (tolnaftate), and Micatin (miconazole).

These antifungal medications are applied directly to the skin in a topical application, and are available as foot creams, lotions, gels, ointments, sprays, powders, or swabs. One brand of medicine may be available in more than one form. Many people also find relief from the blisters, itching, irritation, and stinging that accompanies foot by applying Burow’s solution to the afflicted areas. Burow’s solution is a topical astringent and antiseptic which contains water and aluminum acetate. You can find Burow’s solution in your local drugstore or supermarket.

How They Work

All of these medicines (with the exception of Burow’s solution) work by killing the foot fungus that causes the infection. Most OTC treatments for foot fungus must be used for a period ranging from four to six weeks, although some may be effective within a couple of weeks. When using OTC treatments for foot fungus, it is important to keep treating the problem even if symptoms disappear.

If you don’t follow the entire treatment course, the infection will likely reappear within a short period of time. Most moderate to mild cases of foot fungus can be cured with these OTC treatments. However, more advanced or severe cases may require a prescription oral and/or topical treatment. There are rarely any side effects associated with topical antifungal treatments for foot fungus.

Homespun Treatment

And finally, no discussion about foot fungus treatments could be complete without mentioning homespun remedies. Many folks swear by soaking their feet in a solution of fifty percent lukewarm water and fifty percent white vinegar. This treatment can be used in conjunction with any OTC treatments for foot fungus. It is also a good idea to aerate your feet while treating them for foot fungus; you can accomplish this by wearing sandals or flip-flops.
